Responsibilities

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Provides athletic training services to local high schools and collegiate institutions through prevention, conditioning, re-conditioning and rehabilitation for athletic injuries in the clinic setting under the direction of a physician in collaboration with other medical and allied health professionals.

Career Ladder: The three bands within this position are differentiated by level of independence, supervision required, ability to precept new employees in the use of all equipment and the ability to lead and meet established departmental goals. Athletic Trainer levels and criteria for each level is defined below:

Band I: Entry level Athletic Trainers who are new to the URMC Sports Medicine Department who require training as well as regular direct supervision or guidance from a more senior athletic trainer. This generally involves orientation to the Department's infrastructure, policies, protocols, workflows, procedures and routines. During this period the Athletic Trainer must demonstrate an ability to progress towards proficient and competent performance of required tasks of an Athletic Trainer. 100% of time spent on clinical care and/or outreach activities.

Band II:With minimal supervision, demonstrates proficiency and competence in all aspects of job responsibilities and expectations, and consistently demonstrates initiative to assist in other areas of the department when the need arises. Able to work with student athletic trainers as needed. Demonstrates consistent attention to detail in all outreach and clinical services including complete documentation. Additional duties may include working on special projects. 100% of time spent on clinical care and/or outreach activities.

Band Two status requires a minimum of 18 months of progressively responsible professional work experience in an outpatient orthopedic clinical care and athletic training outreach role.

Band III: In addition to the responsibilities of an athletic trainer Band Two, responsibility for either program or regional coordination. Program coordination includes assisting in supervision, training, compliance, and operations of a sub-program staffed by athletic trainers. Regional coordination includes assisting in supervision, training, compliance, and operations of ATC programs at satellite locations. May serve as a preceptor in the on-boarding of newly hired athletic trainers directly orienting to equipment, routines and procedures, computer programs and software, as well as departmental and hospital policies. Directly assists in the mentoring of newer athletic trainers by providing one-on-one assistance in conjunction with the senior athletic trainer and directors. Able to effectively troubleshoot issues that arise within the department and deal with accordingly. Able to represent the department on various committees such as safety, quality, and operations groups. 90% clinical care and/or outreach activities and 10% administrative activities for program or regional coordination.

Band Three status minimally requires 4 years of progressively responsible professional work experience as an athletic trainer in an outpatient orthopedic clinical care and athletic training outreach role with 1 year dedicated to the URMC Sports Medicine Department preferred.

Senior: Experienced clinician that meets all Band III criteria plus management/oversight of sub-program within the overall program and/or assists/supports/executes Program Director Management functions as directed by ATC program directors.

Senior status minimally requires 6 years of progressively responsible professional work experience as an athletic trainer in an outpatient orthopedic clinical care and athletic training outreach role with 2 year dedicated to the URMC Sports Medicine Department preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Athletic Training Outreach Services in the High School or Organization Setting:

  • Care of Injuries: evaluates injuries, applies first aid, coordinates referral to medical care. Communicates with parents or guardian, as necessary, and the physician regarding medical care. Develops programs of general conditioning during recovery. Instructs athlete in following prescribed home rehabilitation programs. Teaches procedures for a functional progression for return to participation
  • Instructs athletes, parents/guardian and coach regarding conditioning, weight control, diet, prevention and care of injuries. Educates coaches regarding procedures and techniques for enhancement of performance. Teaches student athletic trainers first aid protocol. Provides guidance related to prophylactic skills and record keeping. Instructs on in-service programs for coaching staff regarding care and prevention of injuries
  • Prevention of Athletic Injuries: Evaluates prior injuries and develops and teaches a program of injury prevention. Evaluates injury rate and etiology and suggest changes in sport techniques and/or practice procedures to coaches. Instructs coaching staff regarding sports techniques and practice procedures in view of injury prevention. Educates, coaches and trains student athletic trainers in approved procedures
  • Maintains inventory and assists with ordering of supplies as needed
  • Documents patients' progress and response to treatments in the medical record

Athletic Training and Rehabilitation in the Clinic Setting:

  • Evaluates the patient's functional status and abilities and disabilities for participation in activities (sports). Applies or directs application of various measures and tests. Plans a program of patient treatment related to diagnosis/prognosis from physician's order
  • Determines types and frequencies of rehabilitation and communicates the care plan options with patient
  • Obtains supportive information from other sources, e.g., family members, physician, nursing staff, etc.
  • Communicates with, and recommends to physician and others involved, modification of program as needed

Athletic Trainer Mobility Aid and Patient Assistant in the Hospital Setting:

Under the direction of the registered nurse:

  • Assists with patient needs via call bell system
  • Provides ROM in accordance with plan of care
  • Initiates and assists with transfers in and out of bed, chairs, wheelchairs, and lifts. Instructs and aids in teaching patients and family safe transfer techniques
  • Selects and utilizes transfer equipment safely and proficiently
  • Works collaboratively with all members of the team to meet the mobilization needs of the patient
  • Promotes functional gains through instruction and supervision of patient
  • Participates in creation of a mobility plan
  • Ensures side rails and safety equipment are in full position and operational
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital safety policies and procedures
  • Takes responsibility to notify appropriate persons of any hazards
  • Remains in constant observation of the assigned patient at all times
  • Demonstrates the ability to care for patients of different age groups

Supporting programs within the UR Sports Medicine department:

  • Participates in departmental meetings (both administrative and clinical continuing education programs)
  • Keeps current in the field by reading professional articles and journals
  • Attends CEU courses in ATC related field
  • Participates and attends selected professional meetings and seminars, etc.
  • Performs duties to support Ortho Sports MD's in clinic, including documentation, taking history, performing exam and discussing exercise progression with patients
  • Assist in the ASC with patient care education instructing patients with post- operative exercise guidelines.
  • Performs evaluation and physical testing with workplace health clients in order to develop an exercise program for purposes of injury prevention and health maintenance. May also assist with sports performance programs including but not limited to performance training, ART, and Group Exercise classes

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training or related field required.
  • Master's in same or related field preferred.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • Certification as an Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) required
  • New York State licensure as an athletic trainer required
  • CPR certification required and ability to call for and/or render care in the event of a patient emergency required
  • Employee must maintain all requirements mandated by Strong Memorial Hospital / Strong Health as a condition of employment required
  • Internship route certification in Athletic Training required
